Resort Introduction by The General Manager

Grand four-poster beds, teak furniture, roll-top baths and antique accessories throughout Dunkeld rooms and suites ensconce guests in the cosseted life of a colonial-era tea plantation visitor. Tea Trails, a Relais & Chateaux property, is part of the Resplendent Ceylon “best of Sri Lanka” circuit, created by the family-owned Dilmah Tea Company. Visiting Ceylon Tea Trails is like stepping back in time, with butler service, original furnishings, afternoon tea and lawn croquet juxtaposed with infinity pools and a menu of activities and excursions to choose from. The five bungalows of Ceylon Tea Trails are scattered among the emerald hillsides of Sri Lanka´s Golden Valley of tea, Bogawantalawa, set in the cool, verdant hills so loved by the British during the colonial era. The idea is to disconnect and lose yourself in time while enjoying the pristine scenery. Hiking, biking and boat trips are offered in the surrounding area, alongside day excursions to tourist highlights such as Sri Lanka’s highest town, Nuwara Eliya, two hours away. Guests looking for relaxation can enjoy an aromatic bath or book a spa treatment in their room, and there are also libraries of books or DVDs that can be watched on the television in the lounges. Each bungalow has a slightly different style, while upholding the colonial ambience. Suites come with their own patio or garden and every guest can enjoy the lazy luxury of bed tea in the morning – a fresh, steaming pot of their tea of choice brought to the room. In addition, our dining options are delectable – and prepared according to individual preferences.

Built in 1925 at an altitude of 4750 ft., poised high above Castlereagh Lake, the Dunkeld bungalow offers panoramic views of Castlereagh Lake, Dunkeld estate and the tea factory, as well as spectacular views of the Great Western mountain range. The infinity-edge swimming pool offers awe-inspiring views, whilst the hot tub seemingly floats above the lake surface. The secluded ‘Owner’s Cottage’ offers a romantic one-bedroom residence hidden privately in the tea fields. The lounge is a delight of dark wood and deep red with a warming log fire and drinks trolley where you can help yourself to a pre-dinner sherry or gin and a post-prandial port. Black and white pictures of Sri Lanka and tea plantations adorn the walls and there is even a billiards room for evening games. Step out onto the veranda with awe-inspiring lake and valley views, while the four suites – and stand-alone Owner’s Cottage – will make you feel like the welcome guest of a very well-to-do friend.

Resort Highlights

Tea Factory Tour and Tea Tasting Experience

The guided tour of the Dunkeld Tea Factory is the quintessential tea experience. Our resident Tea specialist passionately delves into all aspects of tea in just the right amount of detail – from a look back to the early days of “planting” and the lifestyles of the early colonial settlers, to the manufacturing process, to how flavours are created to suit various palates – he’s got it covered.
In the evenings, gain a rare and exclusive insight in to a centuries-old art form that has shaped a global industry. Learn about the art of tea tasting through this interactive and guided experience where guests will taste multiple teas under the guidance of their expert host. During the experience, they will learn (and try for themselves) how professional tea tasters identify (and appreciate!) the unique flavour profiles that give different teas their distinction.

Walk the tea trails and go on a biking tour

Enjoy a walk along our trails through beautifully manicured tea-fields and forests with stunning views around every bend – all five of our Bungalows are connected through trails. We recommend a guided walk in the company of a resident naturalist to get an in depth narrative, by spotting animals with their keen eye (especially the smaller critters), identifying bird calls, and interpreting tracks and signs of nocturnal animals such as leopards and smaller cat and mammals such as Fishing Cat, deer, mongoose, and primates who have traversed the trails. Our naturalists are also privy to the workings of tea plantations and can narrate day to day workings visible on the walk.
You could also cycle your way through our trails and explore the beautiful scenery of Sri Lanka’s tea country. Biking is a great way to immerse yourself in the unspoiled and idyllic beauty of the surrounding valleys and hills.
